Internship Overview

Join a unique project that blends history, technology, and storytelling. The PastPort Foundation is a startup non-profit developing a mobile Augmented Reality (AR) experience that places lifelike, AI-generated avatars of historical figures along Boston’s Freedom Trails. PastPort’s mission is to bring honest history to visitors.

If you join our virtual team, you'll use cutting-edge AI tools to create short videos of speaking avatars, and integrate them into a mobile app that displays each figure at their historic location. Working closely with Richard Berenson (AB ’80, JD-MBA ’84), a longtime board member of the Freedom Trail Foundation, you’ll help expand our current experience in preparation for a March 2026 launch in honor of the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution.

The experience already has 20 avatars – many developed by Kenzie Padilla ’28, who now serves on the board of our non-profit. Our goal is to double that number before launch.

This is a hands-on, creative opportunity to shape how future generations engage with Boston’s revolutionary, abolitionist, and suffragist past. Ideal for students interested in AR, AI, digital media, public history, or civic innovation.

Note: This is a volunteer internship, designed to be completed over J-Term. All work can be completed remotely (i.e., not in person), although there may be some in-person get-togethers in Cambridge early or late in J-Term.
